What is IPL Therapy?
IPL (intense pulsed light) therapy is a procedure wherein light energy improves your skin’s color and texture without surgeries. The procedure unwinds the damage caused by excessive sun exposure and age on your face, hands, chest, and neck.
IPL Therapy Treats…
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Sagging skin and laxity
- Vascular lesions and leg veins
- Brown spots and pigmented lesions
- Hyperpigmentation and melasma
- Sun damage and age spots
- Acne scars and surgical scars
- Unwanted face or body hair
The IPL Difference
IPL therapy is different from laser therapy, even though they might seem similar. Laser therapy delivers one wavelength of light to your skin, while IPL therapy delivers numerous wavelengths of light energy. As such, IPL therapy delivers scattered wavelengths that penetrate the underlying layers of the skin (dermis) without damaging the superficial layer (epidermis). As such, the recovery is faster with fewer side effects.
The pigmented cells in your skin from scars, unwanted hair, and lesions absorb the light energy. The heat destroys the unwanted pigments, making your skin appear smooth and clear. Different wavelengths penetrate the skin at different depths and address different skin concerns. As such, IPL therapy is highly personalized to address your specific skin concerns.
Cutting-Edge IPL Therapy with Cynosure Icon
Newport Beach Center for Plastic Surgery uses the cutting-edge Cynosure Icon device for IPL therapy. The Cynosure Icon device has various modules and handpieces, each targeting different skin concerns.
The MaxG and MaxYs handpieces use intense pulsed light (IPL) to treat pigmented and vascular lesions. They deliver specialized pulses of light to the skin, targeting brown spots, sun damage, and veins. As the lesions absorb the energy, they are destroyed and filtered through the body’s natural healing process.
The Cynosure Icon is equipped with a state-of-the-art contact cooling system for instant comfort. Furthermore, the Skintel Melanin Reader measures your skin’s melanin density to optimize the treatment further. As such, the Cynosure Icon device allows us to provide the most customized and personalized treatments, ensuring optimal results and recovery.
The IPL Therapy Experience
The IPL therapy starts with a simple consultation wherein the provider examines your skin quality, discusses your goals, and adjusts the treatment accordingly. The provider calibrates the Cynosure Icon to address your specific skin concerns, whether you have acne scars, pigmented lesions, or other problems. We can apply a numbing gel over your skin, but it’s not necessary. The relevant handpiece moves over the treatment areas, delivering the pulses of light energy into the skin tissues. The entire process concludes within 30 minutes, depending on the treatment areas.
Results and Recovery
The treatment areas will look sunburned for a few hours, but you can resume your daily activities and work immediately. Your skin may also feel sensitive for a few days, and you should wear plenty of sunscreen. However, there’s no downtime or harsh side effects — you can resume your daily activities immediately. The results will gradually appear over 3 to 7 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. Your provider will recommend the ideal treatment frequency according to your specific needs.
