Will I be “put under” for the procedure?
Whether general anesthesia is required during your liposuction appointment depends on the size of the areas being treated. For only small sections, you will most likely only need localized anesthesia so that you are awake during the procedure. For larger sections, Dr. Savalia may recommend using general anesthesia.
What is the difference between liposuction and a tummy tuck?
These are two commonly confused body contouring procedures. A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is focused on eliminating excess skin around the stomach and repairing lax or separated abdominal muscles. Liposuction effectively removes fat cells but does not improve sagging skin or address abdominal muscles. Either surgery can deliver beautiful results in the right patient and can be combined in some cases for more comprehensive body contouring results.
What about nonsurgical alternatives?
There are several new procedures advertised as nonsurgical alternatives to liposuction, such as CoolSculpting®, Smartlipo®, and others. These procedures are all fairly new, and therefore many of them have not undergone thorough long-term testing. If you research reviews of any of these liposuction alternatives, you will notice that feedback is hit or miss. Some people seem to swear by them, while others claim there were no results. Liposuction, on the other hand, has been through decades of testing and has a proven track record of impressive, long-lasting results.
What should I expect during my consultation?
In your initial consultation, you and Dr. Savalia will have the opportunity to get to know each other, so he can better understand your goals for liposuction and what your expectations are. He will also evaluate the target areas to develop an informed idea of the best approach to take. Finally, you will talk about the benefits and risks associated with liposuction, and he will give you more information about what to expect during your surgery and recovery.
What is recovery like after liposuction?
Following liposuction, you’ll be asked to wear a special compression garment to help your body conform to its new contours. You’ll also be provided with detailed post-operative instructions to ensure that your healing goes as smoothly as possible.
When will I see results?
Immediately after your surgery, your results are obscured by swelling, and the treated area is bandaged. Dr. Savalia will ask you to wear special compression garments, to help your body conform to its new contours, and provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions. As the swelling subsides over the following one to three months, you should be able to see your final results more clearly. While you can expect to see a noticeable improvement in your body shape after lipo, it is still important to control your weight to maintain your results long-term.
